Worship FAQs

What is your worship style?

Our worship style is more traditional with a mix of traditional hymns and contemporary praise music.  We have beautiful organ music that supports and strengthens our singing.  We also recite liturgy, prayers, and statements of faith together, lifting our voices as one to God.

How long is your service?

Our worship services usually last about 1 hour long. You can expect to be out of church a little after noon.

What should I wear?

You can wear whatever is comfortable for you!  That's what our worshipers do! Some of our worshipers dress in their Sunday best, following the tradition of their families, while others dress for the season with shorts and short sleeves in the summer and long pants and long sleeves in the winter.  We are much less interested in what you wear and much more interested in welcoming you to our family of faith, so please dress in whatever way allows you to relax and worship God.

Are kids welcome in worship?

Absolutely!  We welcome children of all ages in our worship.  We have 'Children's Sunday' once a month. On that Sunday, children will listen to Children's message and do fun activities together (sing & dance, crafts, and snack time).  Other Sundays, we have coloring packets for kids who may need something to do during the sermon, and we have a nursery you are welcome to go to for little ones who get restless.  Please just ask an usher or greeter when you arrive, and we will happily give your a coloring packet or show you where our nursery is.

Am I allowed to take Communion?

Yes!  As United Methodists, we have open doors and an open table.  Anyone is welcome to participate in Communion because it isn't our table; it's God's table of grace.  All who confess Jesus as Lord and Savior are welcome to join us in this ancient practice.  We take Communion once a month (usually the first Sunday of the month) by inviting worshipers to come to the front of the sanctuary, take a piece of bread, and dip it into a cup of grape juice.  (During the COVID-19 pandemic, each member of the congregation will be given an individual bag containing a small cup of juice, a wafer, and a napkin so that no one is too close to a shared cup.)  At Ballard UMC, we also have a practice of bringing a loaf of bread on Communion Sundays to donate to the local food pantry.  As Jesus feeds us, we seek to feed others.

Can I help lead worship?

Yes!  The United Methodist Church has a long history of having lay people (the people in the pews) lead worship.  Just let one of our pastors know you would like to help lead, and we will work out the details with you.  People often help lead in worship by reading Scripture, leading the welcome and liturgy, and leading the singing.
